Sea Lentils, 19" handmade glass bead necklace, was created by glass artist, Penny Gentle. She is not only a lampworker, but a handweaver and metalsmith, as well. Her home and studio is located on the coast of Maine, where she is always “in touch” with the sea. Each of her pieces of jewelry are one-of-a-kind, and evoke very special, personal reminisces of the sea and its creatures.
All the colors of the tropical seas are contained in these lentil-shaped hollow beads on this lovely necklace! Each bead was made of Uroboros glass in mixtures of blues, greens and clear, evoking the dramatic drop-off of the Tongue of the Ocean, while at the same time evoking the subtle changes of colors in the shallow flats. The beads were formed as hollow beads, and then pressed into a lentil shape, retaining their hollow origins! The spacers are made from a color called “electric yellow”; the sterling silver square-cut, wire clasp is Penny’s own, unique design. The beads are strung on gold 19-strand Beadalon with double tornado crimps for strength and security. Sea Lentils was featured last fall, in the Art of the Hand exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.
