According to Jim Kervin in The Lampworked, Fused and Carved Dichroic Beads of Carol Fonda and Monty Clark:
"Monty and Carol’s work is unique in that they’ve taken their direction from the fanned sculptural shapes in nature. They were not interested in reproducing well-tooled round beads with decorations and images because this felt too restrictive to them. Instead they were inspired by flowers, as well as the botanical works of Carl Faberge and other Art Nouveau styles. They used the fusing compatible Bullseye and Uroboros glass for their beads because its stiffness allows it to hold its shape in the flame with minimal rounding of the edges. They also started mixing small amounts of Dichroic glass into their work. The sparkle it gave their beads resulted in a total sell out of their work that has continued to this day.
The other reason they believe their work is so successful is that they approach it as a business. They don’t make beads with an interesting color selection that they think is funky and that others should like, only to be left with them at the end of the show. They have done a lot of research into which colors sell better and what people are going to want to wear. They have done their reading on colors that compliment customers, ala “Color Me Beautiful” by Carole Jackson. In addition, each year in early spring they scour the fashion magazines to identify the colors people will be looking for jewelry to match.
Another key to Carol and Monty’s success is that they hone their production skills. They just don’t make one or two of each different type of bead and stop because they are bored. No, they make hundreds of the same type of bead varying the color parameters that they have set up for that year. This allows them to build up their speed so that they can even compete with the cheap labor of imported knock-offs of their beads."
